Susana Hayward, a coworker and sort of mentor, is leaving my paper. I won't go into the details of the split, but I am sad to see her go. She's a real newshound. Susana has worked at the Associated Press and the San Antonio Express-News. She was also the Mexico City Bureau Chief for Knight Ridder.
Over the past several months, I have seen some good colleagues leave the newspaper biz. It's tough times in this industry. Look at the Hearst-owned SF Chronicle, they are laying off 100 editors and reporters as I write this.
As the American newspaper biz struggles, I wonder what the future holds. Being a reporter and writer is about the only thing I know how to do. I do it well. But I Increasingly find my interests are not just in America, but global. I desire to live abroad for a while, and write about what I see and learn. More on this soon!
Funny you should mention the declination of the newspaper biz as it was the topic of discussion on our way back from S's lunch.
It's a scary thing to see the world make such a drastic change in the way we communicate.
I feel somewhat guilty myself of not reading hard copy newsprint and opting for web news, blogs, and the ease of clicking rather than turning a page.
But amongst the many changes we must endure, and friends and colleagues we must part with know that communication is never going to leave. Just evolve. And like our hunched back and fuzzy forefathers, we must evolve with it.
I hope you do move and travel and write and share all of your experiences with us.
