Here is an interesting piece from the Poynter Website that argues a blog has been the timeliest source of info on the tragic shooting death of Washington Redskin's free safety Sean Taylor.

Video killed the newspaper star

Yet another article on the emergence of video journalism as possible savior for print media. But the article, from American Journalism review is interesting. I found the article on Romenesko's media site. From the article:

News video has been around for six or seven years on some newspaper Web sites, but in the past 12 to 18 months it has grown from a significant trend into a near stampede. Call up Web sites at random and you'll find a very large, very mixed selection, much of it disappointing, some so awful it makes you cringe, and some reasonably well executed but trivial--the cat stuck in a tree video, the "Gosh, it's hot today" video. But a small proportion is excellent by any standard--the work of David Leeson of the Dallas Morning News, for instance, or Travis Fox of washingtonpost.com.

By the way, the article states that you can buy digital high-def video cameras for as a low as $700. If so, let me know where, because I have never seen any that cheap.

Chico runs for second term

Sergio "Chico Rodriguez," county commissioner for Precinct 1, recently announced he would seek re-election next year. Rodriguez made his announcement at the Bexar County Courthouse on Nov. 7. He was surrounded by supporters and family. In a recent Express-News article by Greg Jefferson, longtime Southside politician Robert Tejeda said he would run against Rodriguez for the commissioner's seat. Tejeda was the incumbent Precinct 1 commissioner Rodriguez beat two years ago to win the seat.

West Campus football lives!

The West Campus High School Cougars beat the Marion Bulldogs 45-35 on Friday night. The win propels the Cougars into the Class 3A playoffs. West Campus High School is slated to close at the end of the year, going out of existence forever if the South San School district has its way. The district voted to close West Campus Hig School in October, citing poor attendence and lack of resources. The 600 or so West Campus students could be forced to attend South San High School next year if the closure goes through. But a group of West Campus parents have sued the district. Their case goes to court again Nov. 14.

Halloween in paradise

My buddy Ruben grew up next door to me here in SA. He lives in sunny South Florida now. As you can see Ruben likes to have fun. He also always seems to surrounded by beautiful women. P.S. That's his real hair. Viva Ruben!

New L.A. newspaper

A new paper is popping up in Los Angeles. They had a recent posting on craigslist looking for "budding" journalists:
