I'm working on an article about Ashley Heights, a new upscale subdvision on Ashley Road, just west of Roosevelt Avenue. It has 124-lots, with homes ranging in price from $165,000 to $195,000.
It's almost a first of its kind subdivision on the South Side. It's a gated community, with a mandatory homeowners association. It's also in the middle of the South San Antonio School District, and surrounded by mostly middle class homes.
I don't know if the developers have sold any lots or homes yet.
Mystery solved! Years ago, the lake started out as a gravel pit. It was owned by Barrett Industries, a former gravel and cement company.
BexarMet owns the lake now, or rather, BexarMet owns the 44-acres of land the lake is located on. It's just off of South Zarzamora Street, near Interstate 35 South.
Over the years, the deep gravel pit (must have become filled with water from rains). It's about 40 to 50 feet deep. BexarMet is selling the lake and the land. It is valued at about $524,000.
Freelance Writer Rita Heck wrote a good story about the number of new condos and apartments coming online in downtown San Antonio in the next few months.
The gist of the story is that downtown living stregthens San Antonio's overall economic and environmental health. With more people living closer to the city's core, more cars are off the road, less pollution, less money being spent on gas. That means more money could be spent on other things.
